The ASML monopoly: the key infrastructure driving chips and AI

The distinction of being the most valuable company in the economic history of the European continent now belongs to the Dutch firm ASML, which has redefined the benchmarks of corporate valuation on an international scale. At the close of Wednesday’s trading session on June 3rd, the group achieved a market capitalization of 668 billion dollars; an outcome that surpasses the previous historic record of 650 billion dollars, established by Novo Nordisk in June 2024.

ASML’s industrial infrastructure enables the delivery of over 110 low-NA EUV systems without requiring the expansion of existing manufacturing sites. This operational capacity, which exceeds prior market estimates, prompted JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley to reaffirm their “Overweight” rating on the company and upwardly revise their respective price targets: the former increased from 1,515 euros to 1,900 euros, while the latter was raised from 1,400 euros to 1,660 euros. The convergent valuations published by the two financial institutions subsequently triggered an acceleration of the stock in the market.

Every next-generation silicon wafer—an indispensable component for both the training and execution of artificial intelligence models—requires processing through an ASML scanner. This equipment represents the exclusive standard adopted by global industry leaders such as TSMC, Samsung, and Intel for the fabrication of advanced logic chips. Indeed, the Dutch firm establishes itself as the world’s sole supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems, thereby holding a critical and structural relevance for the entire semiconductor industry.

The substantial influx of capital generated by the demand for artificial intelligence has propelled the entire semiconductor sector, within which the 50% increase recorded by ASML’s stock aligns seamlessly. Despite this growth trajectory, the Dutch group’s market valuation still exhibits a variance compared to the one-trillion-dollar threshold—a milestone already consolidated by several U.S. entities active in microchip design and manufacturing.

The 100 million dollar investment secured by the San Francisco-based startup Substrate—backed by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and In-Q-Tel—aims to develop an alternative X-ray lithography system powered by a particle accelerator. This initiative belongs to a broader landscape of emerging projects designed to challenge current industry standards, demonstrating that ASML’s dominance, while operating as a de facto monopoly, is subject to intensifying competitive pressures and attempts at technological disintermediation.

ASML’s photolithography systems command a market value ranging from approximately 235 million dollars for a low-NA infrastructure to around 380 million dollars required for the High-NA EXE:5200B model, which has been adopted by Intel for the development of its 14A process node. The scale of these investments, coupled with the complexity of the machinery, confirms that in the short term, none of the emerging alternative technologies are capable of replacing the Dutch company’s scanners in high-volume logic semiconductor manufacturing processes.
